New House!

So, we’ve finally decided to buy a house and have the one we want under contract.

It is a 2/1.5 brick ranch built around the 1950′s. The previous owner was either eccentric or old, so it has all these interesting features like wonderfully tacky light fixtures and pink tiles. We need to change those out and make a few upgrades to it to make it fit us.

The city requires us to change out all the water fixtures to save water. After looking at the cost and effort, we decided to spend a few extra dollars and remodel one of the bathrooms. Which will be a neat project for us to do.

After that we need to put a garage door up so I can have my workshop and supply it with electricity.

It looks like I am returning to Mexico in the morning and may miss the closing. But I’ll keep this space updated.

My Ogio bag sucks

Less then a year ago, I replaced my Targus XL laptop bag with an Ogio Epic. After pretty light travel, it is falling apart.

I contacted Ogio and apparently, the lifetime warranty covers the lifetime of something other than me or the bag. The helpful Ogio lady did offer me 50% off on my next Ogio bag purchase. But I don’t know if I want to do that. I’m disappointed in the way this one has turned out.

Sadly, I can’t find a single company that makes a gadget backpack. Most are school bags with a laptop compartment.

Del Carmen by the sea

To go offshore, I need a special badge. Possibly a special school. I hope not. I’ve done it before. I sit in a room with a few locals, watch videos in their language, listen to lectures in their language and I’m given a little certificate. Normally, it is the same videos and lectures I’ve heard a dozen times for all my other certifications. It is a boring class and they get all uppity if I pull out a book or Gameboy. Even more if I go to sleep.

So yesterday, we went to a photo place and ended up taking a quick tour of the beachfront. Pretty beach, most of the restaurants were open air and it was filled with people being people.

Sadly, I left my camera in my back in the trunk. So I couldn’t take pictures of all the people that don’t understand wearing a mask. I’ve seen them on foreheads, necks, chins, scrunched up to protect just the nose, scrunched up to just protect the mouth and one guy wearing three different types.

The picture place took 12 pictures for 40 pesos(about 4 dollars. Zeroes are meaningless here) and they photoshopped me into a suit. Sadly, the pictures are about a half inch in size, so I can’t use them for anything.

Cutting board

I’ve been working on building an End-Grain cutting board.  I ordered some Jatoba and Maple from Bell Forest Products. This was before I found a decent lumberyard near me.

I let it sit in the house for a week or two so it could acclimate to Georgia weather, and finally got around to cutting one board before the power went out. The wood is a bit thicker then I am used to, but my little Craftsman tablesaw handled it fine. I just had the blade cranked almost all the way out. I found out my kickback pawls weren’t designed for wood this thick. A little scary, but it didn’t have any problems. I was a little worried about how it would handle a thick slab of hardwood

Saturday, we went to a woodturning day at the Dogwood Institute. We saw a few guys turning bowls and pens and one guy was giving a course on turning stools.  Sadly, my little Sherline lathe isn’t big enough for those sorts of projects. After visiting Dogwood I feel a lot better about the class I signed up for. The area looks nice and all the people we saw there seemed to be friendly and on top of their game.

And I should find out today or tomorrow if I am going to Mexico.

Sketchup for woodworkers

I found this while looking for Sketchup resources. One of my big problems has always been I see things in my head, but lack the ability to put them on paper beyond a few crude sketches and measurements. Which is a big problem in the long run because my head is filled with sand.

And to add to it, somebody created a cutlist generator that will tell you what wood to buy and how to lay it out for cutting.

Dog bowl holder

I’ve heard several times from several people that since Dexter is a large dog it isn’t good for him to bend all the way down to eat. We looked at getting a holder to elevate his bowls, but none really caught our eye. I saw a wooden one for 120 dollars! It turns out I have saws and hammers. And scrap wood.

So I got to work.I had purchased a circle cutting jig for my router a few months back. I took it out of the box and found out it fits most every router on the market. Not mine. So I just did a quick eyeballing of the hole and cut it by free hand. It looks terrible, but the bowls cover it. The whole thing it 3/4 plywood except for the top bit which is 1/2 inch.

I had gotten some pre formed plastic trim that looked great until I stained the main body. It came out really dark. So I cut a piece of 1/4 plywood into 1 inch strips and made that fit. I stained these a lighter color to add a little contrast. After I got it all assembled, I thought I should have cut some sort of decoration into the sides. Oh well. I’m going to re-make this eventually using nicer wood. Right now, Dexter is scared of it. So I am glad I just used scrap plywood to make it.

Next is another coat or two of stain to even it out.

What I hate about Star Trek

It isn’t the preachyness or the fans. It is the people behind it that are intent on raping the people that enjoy it.

The three seasons of the original series are on DVD. For the price of a kidney. The entire run of MacGuyver is cheaper. Sadly, they charge this because people pay this.

This is the main reason why that while I enjoy Star Trek more, I have all three Star Wars movies on DVD and not a single Star Trek movie. At least George Lucas rapes over time so we can pretend it is a relationship.

New Table Saw

I got a new Table saw for Chistmas. Except it was purchased in Dallas for pick up in Atlanta. Which would take 6 weeks. Sears didn’t tell me it had come in. Since I didn’t pick it up, they sold it.  So I complained, Dad complained and eventually Sears made it right. I got a call from a manager telling me to expect a call from a manager. Got the call from the manager which called from a different manager asking me how the other call went. Several times in one day. For the trouble, they upgraded the saw and gave me a free warranty.

I spent today assembling it. It is larger has more features and slightly more powerful than the little Black & Decker unit I have.

Yesterday, I was flipping through a woodworking catalog and saw an ad for the Dogwood Institute School of Fine Woodworking. I wasn’t too sure about signing up for it because the price, but I did. The closest time to me was canceled, but there is another one coming up in June that I am signed up. I think it will be fun.

Miniatur Wunderland Hamburg

Awesome. I used to have several model trains, but I never really got into this much. The Chicago Museum of Science and Industry has a model train that I enjoyed. It is a trip from Chicago to Seattle.

I still like to see train layouts and sometimes think about getting some, but I don’t think I have room for it at this point. I think I appreciate the hard work and attention to detail more than I would actually want to do it. Still, N scale is pretty small and cheap.

My barber has a train in his barbershop. But I’ve never seen it work.

Containers 2 Clinics

I’ve taken pictures of container houses. I’ve seen some of the DIY blogs I read gush enthusiastically about them. But they also don’t live in one.  They are depressing, dank, dark and not even close to a place humans should live in.

But this is neat. It makes it easy to ship clinics to parts of the world that may not get them and could be used for rapid deployment to refugee camps.
